What is Faculty Voluntary Retirement / Phased Reduction in Time?

Voluntarily reducing your work time and corresponding pay in an incrementally phased timeframe. 

Who is eligible to participate?

This program is available to all tenure or non-tenure, 9 or 12 month faculty eligible for retirement. Employees not eligible to participate include TERI participants and anyone not currently in a faculty classification.

How do I know if I am eligible to retire?

If in South Carolina Retirement System (SCRS), at least 55 years old with 25 years of state service or any age and 28 years of state service, OR

If in SCRS, 60 years old with at least 5 years of state service, OR

If in an Optional Retirement Program (ORP), 59.5 years old regardless of years of state service.

Is this mandatory?

No.  This program is available on a voluntary basis.

How do I become a participant in the program?

You will complete the appropriate request form, submit the form to your immediate supervisor for approval, he/she will then forward to the applicable VP or Dean for approvals, then the form will be submitted to the Office of Human Resources for the time and pay reduction to be entered into the Human Resources system.

How does it work?

An employee who wishes to participate receives appropriate approvals.

The employee retires from the University.

The employee enters a contractual agreement with the University and is rehired as a temporary faculty employee for a maximum of 3 academic years.

What happens to my benefits?

Temporary faculty positions are not eligible for active state insurance benefits and other voluntary insurance programs offered at the University. Employees may be eligible for retiree insurance benefits based on Employee Insurance Program Guidelines.

Would I accrue sick and annual leave? 

No.  Temporary employees do not accrue leave.
