Classrooms
New ideas need old buildings. -- Jane Jacobs
Holtzendorff Hall at Clemson University was built in 1915 and was originally the YMCA for the then all-male military Clemson College. The YMCA served both the students and the community. Students actually lived here, especially graduate students and international students. A gymnasium, theatre, barber shop, and swimming pool were some of the features of the original YMCA. The building has housed many different departments and organizations over the years, such as Student Affairs, the International Student Association, the "underground coffee house," Pershing Rifles, Tiger Band, and Mu Beta Psi, the music fraternity. In the last 3 years, Clemson University has invested over $ 1 million in renovating classrooms, labs and offices in Holtzendorff.
