DEPARTMENT MARKETING STATEMENT

Clemson is the land-grant university in South Carolina and is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the shores of Lake Hartwell. The Department of Engineering and Science Education is a unique interdisciplinary unit that teaches freshman level engineering courses; advises freshman engineering and science students; and conducts scholarly research and grants PhD degrees in engineering and science education. The department currently consists of 8 tenure/tenure-track faculty, 7 lecturers, 8 staff, 2 postdoctoral researchers, 14 PhD students, and over 1500 General Engineering students.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The College of Engineering and Science (CoES) at Clemson University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Engineering and Science Education (www.clemson.edu/ese).

Responsibilities of the Department Chair include the following: (1) Administrative responsibility for the General Engineering program (the common first year for engineering undergraduate students) and for the Engineering and Science Advising Center. The Chair should foster and maintain tight linkages with undergraduate degree programs and service units in the college and university; (2) Leadership of the department's graduate teaching and education research programs. The Chair must have a keen understanding of scholarship and the ability to articulate and promote scholarly excellence in discipline-based education research (DBER). The Chair should foster a positive, collegial climate and participatory decision-making processes within the department that promotes excellence in the department's programs; (3) Responsibility for the department's organizational performance. The Chair is responsible for fiscal planning and oversight of the department's budgets and resources, and for management of processes and procedures relating to human resources including recruitment, career development, performance evaluations, and retention of faculty and staff; (4) Advocacy for the department within and outside the University. The Chair is expected to establish effective liaisons with other departments, college and university administration, government agencies, industry, and alumni. The ultimate goals of the department are to engage in science and engineering education with other units in the college and the university, increase national and international recognition, and to garner resources (competitive, non-competitive, and gifted) that strengthen and broaden the department's mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in an engineering or physical science discipline, or in STEM education, an excellent record of research productivity, and academic experience in a teaching and research institution. Applicants must be eligible for the rank of tenured full professor. Demonstrated research excellence is expected through a combination of scholarly publications, extramural funding, and recognition through professional activities. The applicant must understand the challenges of teaching, advising, and mentoring at the freshman thru graduate levels, and be able to provide vision and leadership to develop a nationally prominent department. The applicant is expected to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as budgetary and personnel management experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Priority will be given to candidates who have demonstrated: (1) The capacity to provide visionary leadership that supports and promotes excellence in teaching, research, and service; (2) A background in engineering or science education research, and/or educational research methods; (3) An understanding and appreciation of undergraduate and graduate teaching; (4) An appreciation for DBER programs and the synergy of basic research, applied research, and the practice of recruiting, teaching, advising, and mentoring engineering and science students at the post-secondary level; (5) Proficiency in program administration and evaluation, curriculum improvement, fiscal management and development, and collaboration with stakeholders; (6) The ability to create and enhance relationships with other programs and units at the university; (7) The facility to articulate and advocate the vision and goals of the department to a variety of audiences; (8) Commitment to cultural diversity and community; and (9) Significant activity in a national professional society.
