Lisa Benson, Assistant Professor in Engineering and Science Education, is a recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early CAREER Development Award for her project, "CAREER: Student Motivation and Learning in Engineering." Dr. Benson's research focuses on identifying and understanding factors that contribute to engineering students' motivation to learn and succeed, and correlating student motivation with their development of problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Specifically she will be examining differences between different disciplines in engineering in terms of what draws students into them and how students in different disciplines develop engineering skills. Ultimately she plans to develop a way to assess engineering student motivation throughout the undergraduate experience, so that motivation can be included along with student performance when evaluating programs, courses and curricula.
