Wheat Stem Rust Threat

Rust diseases are a common occurrence in small grains, but after all the talk about the soybean rust threat, I thought it only fair to let you know that wheat is facing a similar threat from a new race of stem rust, designated Ug99. Breeders in the US are actively searching for resistance to this race, and some sources of resistance have been identified, but our vulnerability is still high. For more information about this new threat to wheat production around the world, check here:  Global Rust Initiative.

Soybean Rust Update

I know soybeans are not a typical small grain, but since they are grown in close association with wheat in South Carolina, I thought this would be a helpful update. Clemson Department of Plant Industry - soybean rust update
