Varian Gas Chromatograph - Model 3400
In gas chromatography (GC), an inert carrier gas serves as the mobile
phase that elutes the components of a sample mixture from a column containing
an immobilized stationary phase. GC began in 1941 and since that time
has become one of the most widely used analytical techniques primarily
due to the wide variety of columns that are available for gas chromatographs.
The Varian 3400 gas chromatograph located in the Multi-User Analytical
laboratory has a packed column and a capillary column set-up with split/splitless
injector on the capillary column. The packed column system has a flame
ionization detector and the capillary column set-up has an electron capture
detector. An 8200 autosampler (48 sample capacity) is associated with
the system to allow for analysis of samples overnight or during off-time.
The system is controlled through a personal computer equipped with Varian
Star Workstation software and a LaserJet printer. The software allows
for the reintegration and reprinting of previously run samples and well
as the export of chromatograms into Word Processing programs.
