Ethics Across the Curriculum Summer Seminar
(a) Four mornings in May: May 12-15, 2008
(b) Two days in August: August 11 and 12, 2008
The Rutland Institute for Ethics is pleased to announce the ninth annual seminar in its Ethics Across the Curriculum program.
In May, we will meet on four consecutive mornings (May 12- 15). In August we will meet for two full days (August 11 and 12). In both cases, the seminar will meet in the Class of 1941 Studio for Student Communication and we will get underway at 8:30 a.m. The full-day seminar will end at 4:30 p.m. each day; the morning seminar sessions will end at noon. Lunch is included.
Those Clemson Employees who complete the seminar will receive a modest grant in professional development funds. Certificates of participation will be awarded at the EAC banquet on August 12.
The seminar is user-friendly and interactive. Our aim is to equip faculty to integrate ethics into their regular classes. Accordingly, we avoid abstract theory and concentrate on equipping participants with some basic tools. Case studies provide opportunities for hands-on engagement with ethical issues and application of the techniques learned in the seminar.
In the past we have had a theme, for example, Politics on the Global Stage. This year, however, we decided against it. We’ll be working on cases that are timely and of general interest. We’ll also be doing a practicum in which participants work through cases they have written. One other thing we’ll certainly touch on is the relationship between ethics across the curriculum and the gen ed distributed competency in ethical judgment.
To register, please send email to djones1@clemson.edu that includes your name, college, department, and contact information. Be sure to indicate clearly which of the two sessions you want to attend. If you prefer to use campus mail, please send this information to Brad Jones, Rutland Institute for Ethics, 126D Hardin Hall.
Enrollment is limited. Early registration is encouraged.
If you have questions about the seminar, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
