The aim of the Professional Ethics in Design and Building seminar is to enhance practical understanding of relevant state law and, in particular, ethical principles relevant to architectural practice. The approach is interactive and user-friendly. We use case studies (a) to elicit ethical principles and (b) as occasions for practice in applying them. We explain how these ethical principles figure in what we call a “toolbox approach” to ethical decision-making and stress the need to approach ethical issues in a systematic, reflective and responsible way.

General Information

The day will be divided into four 90-minute sessions; 15-minute breaks will separate the two sessions in the morning and in the afternoon. One hour will be scheduled for lunch, which will be provided. Fifteen minutes will be set aside for wrap-up and formal evaluation.

Steve Coe grew up in Melbourne, Florida and graduated from Clemson University’s School of Architecture in 1991. He returned to Clemson University’s Architectural program for his Master’s Degree with additional studies at Clemson’s Genoa, Italy program. Upon graduation in 1993 he obtained a position with Rosenblum and Associates Architects in Charleston, SC. His plan at that time was to introduce himself to the historic culture of Charleston while working in a diverse practice exposing him to a wide variety of projects. Due to his passion for his work and enchantment with the historical qualities of Charleston, he remains in Charleston as a partner at Rosenblum Coe Architects (RCA).

Ethics and Communication

This year the seminar will include a focus on the relationship between communication and ethics, including opportunities (“the positive”) as well as challenges (“the negative”), which, sadly, tend to receive the lion’s share of attention in discussions of ethics and communication

Dr. Daniel E. Wueste
Dr. Daniel E. Wueste

Daniel E. Wueste is director of the Robert J. Rutland Institute for Ethics and professor of philosophy at Clemson University. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Washington University in St. Louis. His primary research interests are in legal philosophy and practical and professional ethics.

Wueste’s work has appeared in various journals including Cornell Law Review, Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, The Canadian Journal of Law and Jurisprudence, Teaching Ethics, Professional Ethics, and Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing. He is the author of the chapter on professional ethics in The Biomedical Engineering Handbook (2nd edition), the chapter on biomedical ethics in The Encyclopedia of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, and the editor of Professional Ethics and Social Responsibility (Rowman and Littlefield, 1994).

He is a Senior Fellow and ex officio member of the Advisory Council of the International Center for Academic Integrity, formerly at Duke University, which now resides in the Rutland Institute for Ethics at Clemson University, and a member of the editorial board of theInternational Journal for Educational Integrity, the journal of the Asia Pacific Forum on Educational Integrity. Wueste completed two terms as president of the Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum and now serves on its executive committee. He is currently serving a four-year term on the executive board of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.

Dr. Stephen Satris

Stephen Satrisis an associate professor of philosophy. Satris joined Clemson in 1986. He did his graduate work in philosophy at the University of Hawaii (M.A., 1971) and Cambridge University, Cambridge, England (Ph.D., 1984).

He designed and teaches a course at Clemson on ethics in architecture. He teaches Introduction to Ethics, Moral Philosophy, and Ancient Philosophy on a regular basis.. His books include Ethical Emotivism (Nijhoff, 1987) and Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Moral Issues, 9th edition (Dushkin/McGraw-Hill, 2004) -- a text widely used at colleges and universities throughout the United States. His work has appeared in numerous journals including the Journal of the History of Ideas, Teaching Philosophy, Ethics, Critical Reviews in Biomedical Engineering, Choice, Philosophy Today and the Journal of Value Inquiry.

Dr. Brenden Kendall

Brenden Kendall joined Clemson's Department of Communication Studies as an assistant professor in 2010. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Communication from the University of Utah, and earned his B.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Montana. Kendall's research engages the intersections of organizational, ethical, and environmental communication, with a focus on metacommunication—that is, how people talk and reason about communication. He is a co-author of the book Just a Job? Communication, Ethics, and Professional Life (Oxford University Press, 2010).

Recently, he has worked with Communication Studies students to develop the ALL INtegrity Project at Clemson, which is a branded, student-to-student, uplifting campaign promoting pride, honor, and ethics within the student body. In 2013, the ALL INtegrity Project will become a multidisciplinary Creative Inquiry course.
