The Rutland Institute for Ethics is housed in the Department of Undergraduate Studies. The Institute faculty have a wealth of experience teaching ethics and working with practitioners on ethical issues in their professions. In addition, several faculty members have published widely in the field of applied ethics.

The Rutland Institute for Ethics has two groups of advisers dedicated to supporting its commitment to ethics across the campus and the community.

The Academic Advisory Panel includes representatives from the University's five colleges, Graduate School, library, central administration, Student Affairs and the Office of Distance and Continuing Education.

The Advisory Board provides guidance in the development of program offerings and helps the Institute fulfill its mission by establishing connections off campus. This committee includes leaders from businesses, professions and higher education.

Debbie DuBose '75

Seneca, SC

Board Chair

Debbie B. DuBose is a 1975 Clemson graduate and currently works as the Executive Director of the Oconee Memorial Hospital Foundation in Seneca, SC.  From 1988 to 2003, DuBose served as the Executive Director of the Clemson Alumni Association.  Prior to working for Clemson, Debbie worked for Duke Power from 1975 to 1988, in their corporate communications and nuclear power generation departments.  Debbie is married to Bob, also a 1975 Clemson graduate, and is the mother of two teenage daughters.

Robert J. Rutland '64

Covington, GA

Bob majored in Industrial Management at Clemson. He is Chairman of Allied Holdings, Inc. in Decatur, GA. In 2000, he established the Robert J. Rutland Center  for Ethics, which has evolved into the Robert J. Rutland Institute for Ethics. He and his wife, Cherry, have three daughters, one of whom is a Clemson alumna.

Stephan C. Barton '72

Athens, GA

Stephan graduated from Clemson in 1972 with a B.A. in English. He received both his M.A. and Ph.D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Stephan is President of MAG Mutual Financial Services in Atlanta. While at Clemson, he was a Tiger Letterman in track and field and a member of the Blue Key Club. Stephan has three children, and his wife's name is Mary. His father and sister are Clemson alumni

W. Harry Durham

Clemson, SC

Harry is an alumnus of Auburn University and the University of North Carolina. He is retired from Clemson where he was Associate Vice President for University Relations. Harry is a member of Tiger Brotherhood and an honorary member of the Blue Key Club. He and his wife, Ina, have two children; one is a Clemson graduate.

John C. Knapp

Decatur, GA

John is President of  The Southern Institute for Business & Professional Ethics in Decatur, Georgia. The Institute is located on the Columbia Theological Seminary campus. He is former President of he Atlanta communications consulting firm, Knapp, Inc.  He served in this capacity for fifteen years.  A graduate of Georgia State University, John received his M.A. from the Columbia Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from the University of Wales. He is considered to be one of the nation's leading experts on organizational ethics and crisis management.  John and his wife Kelly have five children.

S. Richard Sargent '65

Greenville, SC

Dick received his B.S. from Clemson in 1965 in Industrial Management. He is President of D&M, Inc. in Greenville and has held several executive positions at Guilford Mills and Insignia Financial Group. While at Clemson, Dick was a Tiger Letterman in baseball. Dick and his wife, Mary, have three children.

Allan J. Thompson, Jr. '69

Easley, SC

A Clemson alumnus in Chemical Engineering, Buddy is an ophthalmologist with the Jervey Eye Clinic in Greenville. His wife, Elizabeth, graduated from Clemson in 1971 with a B.A. in Secondary Education. While at Clemson, Allan was a member of The Tiger student newspaper staff and Student Government. The couple has two children.

T.L. Shealy, Jr. '56

Kiawah Island, SC

Tom is the retired Vice President of the Fibers Division of Eastman Chemical Products in Kingsport, TN. A 1956 alumnus in Textile Manufacturing, Tom currently lives on Kiawah Island. Tom serves on the Board of Visitors. He and his wife, Elizabeth, have two children; the couple's daughter is a Clemson alumna.

E. Wendell Clamp, Sr. '60

Covington, GA

A 1960 Clemson graduate in Education, Wendell is School Superintendent of the Newton County School System in Covington, Georgia. Wendell and his wife, Nancy, have two daughters; one is a Clemson alumna as was Wendell's father.
