Planned Programs

Endowed Professorship in Practical and Professional Ethics

An outstanding scholar will receive this professorship to conduct research, publish in the area of applied ethics and contribute to the expansion of ethics programs for undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines.

Ethics Resources

The center will be a treasury of information on ethical issues and a source of case-study materials, books and articles for use in classrooms and on- and off-campus training sessions

Research Ethics Project

This ongoing training program will focus on ethics in research. It will develop an ethically appropriate mentoring relationship between Clemson faculty and students. This will have far-reaching effects as Clemson graduates go to work in labs, businesses and institutions throughout the country and the world.

Integrated Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF)

The Rutland Center for Ethics is working in collaboration with the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences faculty and the Roy and Marnie Pearce Center for Professional Communication in seeking NSF support for a doctoral-level certificate program in biotechnology, ethics and communication.

Corporate Education and Training

These ethics education and training programs will be tailored to the specific needs and budgets of organizations and their employees.

The Rutland Ethics Alliance

We have begun working on the development of a membership program and source of financial support for the Center modeled on the Friends of the Brooks Center.  We are especially interested in attracting corporate members.

National Conferences

These major conferences will focus on ethics in business, public policy, scientific research, architecture and the professions. Two kinds of conferences are planned: (1) academic conferences with the potential for publication of selected papers in book form and (2) for practitioners, conferences that involve presentations by leaders in the field, case study sessions and discussion of ways to promote ethics in the field.

Executive Fellows

This program will bring distinguished business and public leaders to Clemson to share their experiences with ethics in their work and to strengthen the corporate-academic partnership based on a shared commitment to the value of integrity.

Existing Programs

Ethics Across the Curriculum Seminar

This week long summer seminar helps faculty and staff in all disciplines incorporate ethical content in their classes. The 2002 summer seminar focused on ethical issues about and within the scientific enterprise. The theme of the seminar changes each year. In 2002 it was "Ethics in Business". While the case studies focus on the chosen theme, the seminar is designed so that faculty from all disciplines can participate in and benefit from discussion of the topic.

J.T. Barton Jr. Annual Ethics Essay Scholarship Competition

This annual program began in fall 2001. Each year, an issue will be identified, materials will be gathered for student use in preparing essays for submission, efforts to coordinate with fall courses will be made and a renowned speaker will be invited to talk on the issue in a University colloquium. President Barker agreed to the center's use of the Presidential Colloquium in 2001-02 to launch the Barton Ethics Essay Competition. The President's Colloquium in 2001-02 was titled "Science and Values: New Frontiers, Perennial Questions." (The Rutland Center's interim director was one of two faculty members responsible for coordinating the colloquium. The EAC seminar in 2001 had the same title and focus.) Bioethicist Gregory Pence was the invited speaker. He gave a public lecture at the Brooks Center November 8, 2001 on ethics and human cloning. The topic of his lecture presented the issue for the essay competition. Faculty from the Department of Philosophy and Religion judged the essay competition. $3,000 dollars in scholarships was awarded in the first competition.

Self Civic Fellows Project, First-Time Candidate Training Program

(with the Jim Self Center on the Future)

Ethics is key in this program designed to empower political candidates to run effective campaigns that promote rather than detract from public confidence in government.

Ethical Life Project

This series of events for students will promote reflective and responsible moral action. Planned events include ethics-driven colloquia; panel discussions with professionals, business leaders and others; and performances, films and other presentations that are followed by facilitated ethical discussion. The inaugural event, a production of the play Oleanna by David Mamet, was an event in the Presidential Colloquium 2002-03, "Academmic Integrity and the Integrity of the Academy".

South Carolina Institute for Service-learning and Ethics, SCISE

The institute prepares teachers in high schools or community and technical colleges to promote character development by integrating ethics and sophisticated techniques of reflection into their service learning courses

Voices Of Experience

The Center’s speakers program is called "Voices of Experience.”  In addition to facilitating visits to classes by the Voices of Experience speakers (primarily members of the Advisory Committee and area business leaders), we plan to sponsor an ethics lunch for students each term.

AIA (American Institute of Architects) Continuing Education Programs

The Rutland Center is an AIA/CES Authorized provider. We are authorized to provide ethics programs for architects across the country and/or via the Internet. We are also authorized to put on programs at the regional and national meetings of the AIA.
