A record book helps youth set goals, track time and expenses, and identify the knowledge and skills they have gained through 4-H.Parents and other adults help youth set realistic goals at the beginning of each year. These goals and the tasks needed to reach them will be documented in “My 4-H Project Record Book”. Throughout the year youth will update their record book to indicate which tasks they have completed and what they learned from the experience. Adult volunteers will review the record books at the end of the year, provide suggestions to each youth on how to overcome obstacles that prevented them from reaching their goals, and ideas on goals for the upcoming year.

The 4-H Cover Letter and Resume is designed to help Senior 4-H Members highlight their overall 4-H achievements. The resume also highlights achievements in academics, organizations and clubs as well any work experience. Only those achievements that most closely relate to the stated objective, or are most meaningful to the youth are included. This teaches youth how to prioritize and summarize their accomplishments while creating a professional document.

The 4-H Portfolio is designed to help Senior 4-H Members prepare a comprehensive summary of their involvement in the 4-H Program and the impact it has made on their life. A portfolio is a collection of items and information that documents growth and achievement over a period of time. These items can be written work, art work, photographs, audio tapes, videotapes, animated power point, or other items. They must be organized and presented in such a way that they convey meaningful information and show knowledge and skills developed, through the 4-H career, to those looking at the portfolio.

As youth progress through the 4-H program, there are several leadership positions, National trips, and scholarship programs for which youth must interview. To prepare these youth for interviews, youth are taught how to prepare for an interview (research), given practice questions, instructed on how to project confidence, and how to handle difficult questions. Tips are also provided on how to dress, how to give a proper handshake, posture, and other etiquette information.

The purpose of the 4-H Presentations Training is to provide youth with activities and tools that teach them how to research, plan, organize, create, and deliver a presentation. Through a positive learning environment, 4-H youth will be able to develop effective public speaking skills and will be able to practice and perform these skills with confidence.

The purpose of the State 4-H Senior Leadership training is to enhance the leadership, citizenship, and communication skills of 4-H teens. Through this advance communications training teens are prepared to educate the public and other clubs about 4-H programs and important youth activities that 4-H has to offer. Senior Leaders are the 4-H spokespeople across the state.

After completing a specialized train-the-trainer conference and an on-line program certificate, these teen Ambassadors will be prepared to serve as instructors for county and regional workshops. 4-H Ambassadors will serve as the teen trainers for 4-H Presentation Workshops, 4-H Officer & Club Leadership Workshops, 4-H Junior Leadership Workshops, and 4-H Youth/Adult Partnership Workshops. These teens will work with adult event coordinators in planning and preparing for these various workshops.
