Fun & Healthy Halloween Treats

Halloween season is here and that means candy galore. In fact, U.S. Halloween candy sales generate more than 2.2 billion dollars annually. That’s a lot of candy! While candy IS one of life’s pleasures it is only one of the numerous treats that are available for Trick or Treating.

Some tips for promoting a healthy Halloween are:

  • Children should eat a healthy meal before trick or treating so that the candy becomes desert not supper.
  • Break the tradition of giving out large amounts of sweet treats to your ghosts and goblins for Halloween. Instead, give them treats that are low in fat, sugar and provide vitamins, minerals and fiber. Become known as a giver of fun and healthy treats. Some examples of healthy treats include:  mini bags of microwavable popcorn, snack size bags of pretzels, gold fish or animal crackers and miniature boxes of raisins. The 100-calorie size packets are a good option for portion control.

  • Fangs, fake costume jewelry and glow sticks are some non-food items that can be given away and may even accessorize costumes.
  • Party favors, small toys, pencil toppers, stickers, temporary tattoos, and more can add to the fun without adding unwanted calories from sugar.
  • Shop for inexpensive toys that promote physical activity like hacky sacks, jump ropes and mini Frisbees. Be sure that items that could become choking hazards are not given to small children.
