Pruning Large Limbs
When tree limbs have to be pruned, it is important to do it correctly so that the tree will heal properly. Dead or diseased limbs can be removed anytime during the year. Other limbs are best removed during the dormant season. If pruning is done properly, the tree will quickly grow callus tissue over the cut. Pruning should be done with a sharp pruning saw if limbs are greater than 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Use the three-cut method when removing large limbs.
Cut 1.......Undercut the limb about 4 inches from the branch collar, cutting through about one-third the way or until the saw begins to bind. Cut 2.......Cut through the limb from above about one inch beyond the undercut until the limb falls. Cut 3.......Cut off the remaining stub flush with the collar.
