Carolina Geranium

Carolina GeraniumThis winter annual can be identified by its reddish stems, round deeply lobed leaves, small pink five-petaled flowers, and elongated seed capsules that resemble a "stork's bill." Carolina geranium (Geranium carolinianum) weed reproduces by seed.

Control: Handpulling is easy and effective. Maintain a dense, healthy lawn that crowds out weeds naturally and reduces the chances for invasion. Apply a two to three inch layer of mulch to ornamental beds. Pre- and postemergent herbicides are available depending on the crop.
