White Clover

White CloverThis low-growing perennial has compound leaves comprised of three leaflets. At the base of each leaflet is a white mark. White clover (Trifolium repens) produces white globe-shaped clusters of flowers in early spring. Reproduction occurs mostly from seed, but clumps will gradually increase in size from creeping stems that root at the nodes. Once established white clover fiercely competes with turfgrasses.

Control: Handpulling is usually not practical in turf areas, but it can be easily removed from flower beds when the soil is moist. White clover seed can often be introduced to the lawn through purchased grass seed, so look for certified turfgrass seed. Several herbicides are available depending on the crop.
