As of the latest Equine Census (2004), the number of equines in South Carolina is estimated at 84,300 with the total value of equine and related assets creating a $3.3 billion impact for the state's economy. There's a wide variety of equine-related activities throughout the state that range from pleasure riding and breeding to steeplechases and hunter jumper events. The top counties for equine numbers are Aiken, Anderson, Greenville, Spartanburg and Lexington. Many top-named trainers and riders from across the country are attracted to South Carolina and our temperate climate to compete, train and operate their equine facilities.
Whether it be a horse, donkey, mule, or pony, Clemson Extension offers programs to all equine owners and managers to improve the productivity and efficiency of their operations, as well as the health and well-being of their equine companions. Our agents hold workshops and assist producers throughout the state with pasture management, pasture weed control, nutrition, health and wellness, farm management and more.
