S.C. DHEC: H1N1 Virus Info (Swine Flu)
Posted on April 29th, 2009 | UPDATED May 1st, 2009
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is providing the most up-to-date information regarding the H1N1 virus's impact on our state. The site details the number of known cases of H1N1 within S.C.'s borders, as well as what is currently known about the virus:
- Several types of antiviral drugs seem to work for swine flu when taken shortly after symptoms begin. In South Carolina, we have 435,000 of these treatment courses — 10 pills per course — on hand. The drugs are called Tamiflu and Relenza. The federal government stockpiles these drugs for emergencies and has reserved an additional 640,000 treatment courses for our state. Federal officials will send about 140,000 of those courses soon.
- To fight the spread of the flu virus:
- Wash your hands thoroughly and often.
- Cover your cough with your sleeve, not your hand.
- Stay home if you're sick.
- Stay away from people who are sick.
- Eat a healthy diet and get plenty of rest.
- It takes from 48-72 hours for symptoms to show up after a person has come in contact with the virus.
- There's no way to know how long the outbreak will last, but we expect this virus to be around for quite some time.
- The 10 probable cases of H1N1 in South Carolina are associated with Newberry Academy. The school has been closed this week. Schools routinely close whenever there is a cluster of illnesses. It’s too early to tell if more schools will close.
- There is no evidence that you can get swine flu from eating pork.
- If you start to have symptoms of the flu, call your healthcare provider or your local public health clinic for guidance.
UPDATE: APPA has provided additional information about the H1N1 virus, including links to news and information from the U.S. Center for Disease Control; an FAQ factsheet from the U.S. Department of Education on how to properly prepare for a potential H1N1 outbreak in or around our campus; as well as a Google map of the United States that is tracking cases of H1N1 on U.S. college and university campuses.
New Energy Awareness Site
Posted on March 18th, 2009
Clemson Facilities invites all students, faculty and staff to view the new Energy Awareness site, which is located at this address: http://www.clemson.edu/facilities/energy/.
To meet the requirements of the SC Legislative Bill H4766 and our own campus-wide Sustainable Energy Policy, Facilities must strive to reduce energy consumption per gross square foot of building space on campus by an average of 1% per year beginning July 1, 2008. The ultimate goal is to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2020 relative to the fiscal year 2000 baseline.
Facilities plans to achieve this goal by promoting sustainable energy initiatives designed to lower the consumption of energy on campus and reduce its carbon footprint. You can learn what steps Facilities is taking to meet this goal by viewing the site.
Furthermore, you can make a difference in helping reduce Clemson’s energy consumption! Be an active participant in helping Clemson achieve 20% by 2020. TAKE THE ENERGY PLEDGE! http://www.clemson.edu/facilities/energy/pledge/.
