University Planning & Design Staff

Consisting of a small but very capable group of individuals, University Planning & Design is staffed by four (4) full-time employees and a varying number of part-time student workers.

Gerald Vander Mey, Campus Master Planner
Gerald Vander Mey plays a large role in the evolution of Clemson University's campus. As the Director of University Planning & Design (formerly known as Campus Planning), he and his department are tasked with the challenge of addressing long and short-term planning issues, as well as developing solutions to ever-changing demands of students, faculty, and staff.

Barry Anderson, Landscape Architect
As the University's resident campus landscape architect, Barry Anderson provides landscape architectural design and planning services. His primary role includes reviewing and producing illustrative drawings, construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates that support the University's long and short-term planning goals. Building on Clemson's distinctiveness, he provides clear, accurate, and appropriate designs for large and small projects. Barry engages university personnel, commissioned architects, and engineers in the application of University Design Guidelines and assists in maintaining the campus environment in a healthy, safe, and attractive manner.

Pete Knudsen, Assistant Campus Master Planner
A graduate of Clemson University's City and Regional Planning program, Pete Knudsen joined the Facilities staff in 2005 and brings years of experience in city planning, transportation planning, and geographic information systems. Pete assists in the development of short and long-range plans regarding campus resources and capital projects. Pete's other responsibilities include management of special projects such as the Riparian Corridor Master Plan, the biennial Parking Utilization Study, the Parking & Transportation Master Plan, and coordination of the selection of engineers for deferred maintenance projects and indefinite delivery contracts. Pete also manages the University Planning & Design GIS resources and provides expertise in numerous mapping and data analysis techniques and currently oversees the development of a campus-wide 3D digital model.

Claudia M. Johnson, Administrative Assistant
Claudia has worked at Clemson University since 1993 and for University Planning & Design since August 2003. Her primary responsibilities include managing the front office, updating the University Planning & Design webpage, assembling the Qualifications Analysis booklets on A/E firms, tracking the selection process for various university projects, and coordinating a variety of meetings both on and off-campus.
