Inspections and Permits

The University Facilities Department is responsible for issuing permits for construction activities to assure compliance with all applicable codes and university polices. We're dedicated to Clemson University's desire to provide the finest possible environment for learning and research.

The Permit Process

A required permit must be obtained from the University Facilities Department's Building Official prior to any work being started on the Clemson Campus. Obtaining the permit is the responsibility of the University Project Manager or agent and the contractor. The contractor is responsible for their work, which includes insuring that said work is checked by our University Inspection Staff. Before a contractor can obtain a permit, they must be licensed and qualified in the State of South Carolina.

Obtaining a Facilities Renovation Permit

  2. Submit application with attachments to University Building Official for approval. A permit application must consist of information which will clearly indicate instructions to a contractor of all work to be done.
  3. If Request involves modifying the floor plan, the permit package MUST include a detailed sketch of changes.
  4. Your application will be reviewed for compliance with federal and state laws as well as university standards.

    • Handicapped Accessibility
    • Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Codes
    • Fire Codes
    • Environmental Safety and Health
  5. The requestor shall allow 3 weeks to complete the initial review. Because the application is often returned to originator with request for more information before it can be approved, every effort should be made to allow as much lead time as possible.

The Construction and Inspection Process

  1. A copy of the approved permit and plans must be posted at the work location.
  2. Inspections may be scheduled by a contractor or permit holder at anytime during normal work hours (#656-6771).
  3. Inspections are required while the work is in plain view of the inspector such as before enclosing walls or ceilings.
  4. A final inspection is required before the space can be reoccupied.
  5. Auditoriums and other places of assembly must post a sign indicating the maximum occupant load. Please call anytime you need assistance. Tom Henderson C.U. Building Official (864) 656-6771.
