Inside NOW: ‘One Clemson’ needs facilitators; organic vegetables workshop
May 7, 2008
Clemson’s employee recognition picnic Wednesday on the Military Heritage Plaza served up a great lunch outside in great springtime weather. Thanks to Lawrence Nichols and his human resources staff, who hosted this annual event; to Aramark and Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, who provided lunch; and to the volunteer musicians who entertained.
Photos taken at the picnic soon will be posted to the Faculty & Staff Web page. This site is for you. We hope you’ll bookmark it and visit daily for news, events, profiles and useful links to university resources.

1. Staff encouraged to attend year-end faculty meeting
Clemson will convene its annual spring semester faculty meeting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 8, in the Brooks Theatre. Although this meeting of the faculty is mandated by the Faculty Manual, staff are invited and encouraged to attend.
The university will honor new emeriti faculty as well as recipients of the following awards:
Frank A. Burtner Award
Godley-Snell Agriculture Research Award
Outstanding Research Award
Class of 1940 Bradbury Award
A reception will follow in the Brooks Center lobby.
2. Volunteers needed for ‘One Clemson’ sessions during August orientation
Clemson is asking for your help to ensure the success of an important component of the new extended orientation for the university’s newest students. “One Clemson: Yours, Mine & Ours,” will be held in small-group sessions on Monday, Aug. 18, to engage first-year and transfer students in discussions about one of our core values — respect.
Facilitators are needed for small groups of 20-30 students, who will participate in a series of interactive activities aimed at encouraging dialogue and increasing awareness of and respect for different cultures and backgrounds. The program ties in with our university goal of “strengthening our sense of community.” This initiative has been redesigned since last year’s event and is all new.
Program creators say this program “has the potential to plant a seed with Clemson students that will encourage them to seek opportunities to learn from those around them during their time at Clemson and beyond.” Participants will be asked to consider what respect means to them personally and as a part of a diverse community.
Volunteers are needed who embrace the concept of respect and appreciation of differences, have good communication skills, and understand the importance of peer-to-peer leadership. The program needs people who are comfortable speaking and interacting in front of a diverse group, who are dependable and who have good listening skills.
Students (undergraduate and graduate) will serve as the primary facilitators and must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPR and be of at least sophomore standing to participate.
Faculty and staff will serve as support facilitators and must be currently employed by Clemson or emeritus faculty to participate.
All facilitators must:
Participate in a facilitator training session. These sessions will be 4 hours in length and will be scheduled during Maymester and Summer I.
Participate in a pre-event training on Wednesday, Aug. 6 or Friday, Aug. 15.
Be available on Monday, Aug. 18, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to co-facilitate two small-group sessions (20 – 30 students), 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. There will also be pre-and post-event meetings. Lunch will be provided.
Sign up to be a facilitator on the Gantt Intercultural Center Web site.
Click on “One Clemson: Yours, Mine & Ours” and follow the instructions for completing and submitting a facilitator’s application.
Send applications to 210 Hendrix Student Center by:
- Wednesday, May 14, for Maymester facilitator training
- Friday, June 6, for Summer Session I facilitator training
