1. Trial martial art classes offer unique exercise
If you wish to develop a more regular exercise habit, here's an opportunity to try a traditional, non-competitive martial art.
Free trial classes are being offered at Clemson in Karatedo Doshinkan, a form of karate. Doshinkan emphasizes a unique balance between physical activity and eastern philosophy. The training is designed to gradually improve physical fitness and capacity regardless of your beginning level.
Instructor June Pilcher encourages those 17 years old and above to try the trial classes in Karatedo Doshinkan. These introductory sessions will be held on May 19 and 22, 5-6:30 p.m.
Contact Pilcher at jpilche@clemson.edu or 656-4985, for class location or if you are interested but cannot attend a trial class.
2. ‘Hot Dates/Hot Rates’ at the Conference Center & Inn
The Conference Center & Inn at Clemson University is offering a special “Hot Dates/Hot Rates” for Clemson faculty and staff during the upcoming summer months.
Members of the Clemson family and their extended families can enjoy the accommodations of the James F. Martin Inn beginning May 30 through July 31 for $79 per room per night. This offer can NOT be used in conjunction with freshman orientation, special events or for group blocks.
Your guests will feel right at home with the Inn’s upscale amenities including continental breakfast and wireless Internet service. And the pool and tennis courts at the Walker Course are available for use by inn guests, free of charge. (The pool is closed on Mondays).
To make reservations contact Sharon Franks, Inn General Manager, at sharonf@clemson.edu.
And if you are looking for the perfect, unique gift, consider purchasing a gift certificate for one of the inn’s special packages, such as the “Stay and Play Golf Package” or the “Ultimate Get Away Romance Package.”
Details on these and other packages can be found on line or by calling the inn’s toll free number, 1-888-654-9020
3. University recommends energy and water conservation on campus
Clemson’s utilities services department asks that you do your part to conserve energy, fuel and water this summer on campus and at home. Our region is still in a "severe" drought while energy and fuel costs are rising at unprecedented rates.
Here are a few suggestions that can make an immediate impact on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, save potable water as well as reduce the cost of operations.
Tips to Save Energy and Water on Campus This Summer
- Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
- Turn off coffee makers, TVs, radios, computers and other electronic and appliances when not in use.
- For cooling, set thermostats no lower than 78ºF.
- Use power save options on your computer rather than screen savers.
- Replace all incandescent light bulbs with a Compact Fluorescent (CFL). For those in E&G facilities, call in a work order through your building security coordinator.
- Buy the most energy efficient appliances and electronics. See Sustainable Procurement Policy at http://www.comptroller.clemson.edu/polproce/policies/sustainable_procurement.htm
- Close windows and doors to the outside while building is air-conditioned.
- Do not leave water running while washing your hands, shaving or brushing your teeth.
- Close fume hoods in laboratories when not in use.
- Walk, bike, carpool or use the CAT bus whenever possible.
- Report any leaks or problems immediately to your building security coordinator or call campus police after hours.
Clemson is asking for your help to ensure the success of an important component of the new extended orientation for the university’s newest students. “One Clemson: Yours, Mine & Ours,” will be held in small-group sessions on Monday, Aug. 18, to engage first-year and transfer students in discussions about one of our core values — respect.
Facilitators are needed for small groups of 20-30 students, who will participate in a series of interactive activities aimed at encouraging dialogue and increasing awareness of and respect for different cultures and backgrounds. The program ties in with our university goal of “strengthening our sense of community.” This initiative has been redesigned since last year’s event and is all new.
Program creators say this program “has the potential to plant a seed with Clemson students that will encourage them to seek opportunities to learn from those around them during their time at Clemson and beyond.” Participants will be asked to consider what respect means to them personally and as a part of a diverse community.
Volunteers are needed who embrace the concept of respect and appreciation of differences, have good communication skills, and understand the importance of peer-to-peer leadership. The program needs people who are comfortable speaking and interacting in front of a diverse group, who are dependable and who have good listening skills.
Students (undergraduate and graduate) will serve as the primary facilitators and must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPR and be of at least sophomore standing to participate.
Faculty and staff will serve as support facilitators and must be currently employed by Clemson or emeritus faculty to participate.
All facilitators must:
o Participate in a facilitator training session. These sessions will be 4 hours in length and will be scheduled during Maymester and Summer I.
o Participate in a pre-event training on Wednesday, Aug. 6 or Friday, Aug. 15.
o Be available on Monday, Aug. 18, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to co-facilitate two small-group sessions (20 – 30 students), 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. There will also be pre-and post-event meetings. Lunch will be provided.
To sign up to be a facilitator, go to the Gantt Intercultural Center Web site at:
http://stuaff.clemson.edu/gic/
Click on “One Clemson: Yours, Mine & Ours” and follow the instructions for completing and submitting a facilitator’s application.
Send applications to 210 Hendrix Student Center by:
o Wednesday, May 14, for Maymester facilitator training
o Friday, June 6, for Summer Session I facilitator training
