1. Marrow donor drive to be held at Hendrix Center April 24

Being a bone-marrow donor can be a life-saving experience, and members of the Clemson community have an opportunity to begin that process tomorrow. Zeta Tau Alpha sorority will sponsor a bone marrow donor drive from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Hendrix Student Center.

The drive is being held in honor of Katie-Belle, the 9-month-old leukemia patient, who is the daughter of a Class of 1991 alum and the cousin of a current student and Zeta Tau Alpha sister.

The cost of testing will be fully funded by the National Marrow Donor Foundation. The process only requires that volunteers complete a health history form and allow the inside of their cheek to be swabbed with a cotton-tipped swab.

2. Mark your calendar for employee-recognition event May 7

Inside Clemson doesn’t have all the details yet, but we’ve been assured that Clemson will celebrate “State employee Recognition Day” with free lunch on the Military Heritage Plaza, and you don’t want to miss it.

Chief Human Resources Officer Lawrence Nichols and his staff are planning a lunchtime event for May 7 with food, fun and entertainment. Stay tuned to Inside Clemson for more information next week.

3.  HR offers retirement planning seminar May 13

It’s never too early to begin planning toward retirement and financial goals, and Clemson’s “Planning for the Future” seminar is a good place to start.

This program will at held from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on May 13 in the McKissick Theatre of the Hendrix Student Center.

Presented by Clemson’s human resources office, this free one-day seminar will provide practical information beneficial to everyone, regardless of how near or far you are from actual retirement. Speakers will cover a variety of topics, including  S.C. State Retirement System benefits, insurance, Social Security, financial planning and estate planning.

Register on the Internet.

4.  Vending Fund requests due May 9

Revenues from vending machines on campus make many special activities and projects possible, and May 9 is the deadline to submit requests for this year’s funding.

Every soda, juice, candy bar and pack of crackers purchased from a campus vending machine adds to the pool of money available. A portion of these revenues is allocated each year to fund activities not normally supported by departmental operating budgets.

All requests should be sent in memorandum form on departmental letterhead. They must include the appropriate signatures or be routed through e-mail to the appropriate individuals.

Send requests to Penevle Bowen at G-06 Sikes hall or via e-mail to pbg@clemson.edu. Requests must be received no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, May 9.

Any department or recognized University organization may request funds for specific activities -- no blanket allocations are made and funds are not intended to supplement inadequate operating budgets. According to the "Budgets and Financial Planning Policies and Procedures Manual," "priority will be given to local activities that enhance the intellectual and cultural life of the community."

Requests should include itemized funding dollar amounts requested, along with complete explanations of the intended use of the funds. Those from academic departments should be coordinated with the appropriate dean's office, and those from student organizations should be channeled through Student Government. Single requests should be consolidated through your budget center.

The Vending Committee reviews requests and awards the funds during its meeting in June. Then letters will be sent out in July, indicating whether requests were approved or denied. Funds allocated in a fiscal year, generally must be spent during that fiscal year.

For further information, contact Penevle Bowen, budget coordinator in the budgets and financial planning, at 656-2423 or pgb@clemson.edu.

5.  Publications and promotion offices to be closed April 29

Clemson’s publications and promotion department will be closed on Tuesday, April 29, for a day of professional development activities.

If you have questions or special needs relating to this closure, call 656-2467.
