4-H Down On The Farm

Name

Mark J. Talbert

Situation

Today's youth are disconnected from agriculture. Children have very little understanding of modern agriculture and the origin of food. This generation will become the state's policy makers and their decisions will possibly impact the future of farming; therefore it is imperative that these children learn about agriculture in their county and state.

Response

In cooperation with the Fairfield County Cattlemen's Association, I implemented a "Down on the Farm Day" as an educational effort to explain, describe and expose kindergarten through second grade students to local farming commodities. Liz Bankhead (president of cattlemen's association) and Tammy Tanner (CES administrative specialist) executed all details of inviting all K-second graders in Fairfield County. Local farmers and county agents (Liz Buist, Mark Talbert and Jay Crouch) were teachers at eight teaching stations that included: goats, milk, beef cattle, dairy cattle, pigs, turkeys, horses and tractors. Other collaborators included Farm Bureau, Fairfield Tractor Supply, Chester Co. Cattlemen's Association, Fairfield County School District and Richard Winn Academy.

Impact

As a result of this program, 300 students and teachers were taught some of the basic principles of agriculture in Fairfield County. These children developed a better understanding of how food is grown and what we grow in their home county. Our extension office received 20 letters of appreciation stating that the students learned where food comes from as a result of this program. Upon the teachers request, we plan to implement another "Down on the Farm Day" in late September of 2005.
