4-H Summer Day Camp
| Name | Sherretta Thomas | | Situation | Over 23% of South Carolina children and youth live in poverty and 10% live in extreme poverty, thus reducing their opportunities for healthy growth and development. Adult health status is influenced by childhood health habits. Some of the risk factors for major chronic diseases show up early during childhood. It is hard to change habits as adults. | | Response | A partnership of the 4-H agent, Nutrition agent, Ag agent, Cattlemen's Association and the Fairfield County Recreational Department was formed to conduct a 4-H Summer Day Camp in Fairfield County. Fairfield is considered to be a rural county. Our goal was to teach the youth how to make healthy choices for a lifetime. The 4-H agent planned and conducted 3-hour sessions for 4 days. Twenty youth participated in the program and ages ranged from 7 to 11 years old. The youth learned how to make healthy snacks (hands-on-demonstration), how to use the food guide pyramid and apply it to their everyday food choices. We also spent a day visiting farms to see how our food supply is raised and grown (this tour was
compliments of the Cattlemen' Association). They also learned about career choices in agriculture.
| | Impact | Participants increased their knowledge on how to select healthy choices. At the end of the week, youth participants were presented certificates of completion. Out of the 20 youth, 85% reported that they learned some new things. All youth reported the importance of making wise and healthy choices for better living. Future plans to continue this summer collaboration will be conducted annually. |
