Meeting The Needs Of Others Through A Community Service Project.
| Name | Sherretta Thomas | | Situation | Homelessness has its roots in the persistent poverty and disparities in development and access to opportunity in South Carolina. Addressing homelessness is a major challenge for many communities and without information about the best way to address the problem, it will continue to impact the lives of those who experience homelessness and the communities that they live in. Currently, in Fairfield County is an emergency or transitional shelter that house battered women/children and individuals. This shelter is primarily ran on grants and donations. Because of the country's/county's latest economy, many of the operational funds have been very limited. This has cause the shelter to depend heavily on in-kind gifts and donations from the community. | | Response | Last year summer day camp 4-H'ers had a service project component during their week of camp. The service project was "care cloths". The care cloth contain toilets items like: soap, shampoo/conditioner, tooth paste/brush, mouth wash, and lotion. The 4-H'er formed an assembly line in preparing the care cloth which also had to be sown (the older 4-H'ers assisted by a FCL member worked the sewing machines). Once completed, the 50 care cloths were presented to the director of the emergency/transitional shelter in Fairfield County. | | Impact | The 4-H'ers service project aided a need of all the homeless and battered victims in the emergency/transitional shelter. This project really gave the 4-H'ers a great sense of giving back to the community. |
