Photos of Fatal & Non-Fatal
During a tractor overturn, a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and seat belt are 98% effective in preventing injury to the operator. When a tractor without ROPS overturns, the operator frequently is killed. Farmers who survive tractor overturns usually are injured, some severely, and sometimes are permanently disabled. A ROPS and a fastened seat belt can prevent nearly all of these injuries and deaths.
These photographs and captions can be used as part of a display or as materials to be examined and discussed at farm community meetings.
Group
Activity for Community Meetings
The photographs and captions can be used as “triggers” to
stimulate thought and discussion at local community meetings.
After they have examined their photos and discussed the three questions that accompany each photo, ask each small group to show their photograph and present their conclusions to the whole group.
1.
What do you think happened here?
2.
What do you think happened to the tractor operator? Why?
3.
What do you think the consequences of this event may have been for
the tractor operator and the members of his or her family? Explain.
Then give each small group of participants a copy of the “Scenario” document that applies to their picture.
Display
Or you can use the “Photos of Fatal & Non-Fatal Tractor
Overturns” in a display. The
pictures along with their scenario can be developed into an informative
display showing the benefits of having tractors equipped with ROPS.
