Research Areas

My research interests are primarily focused on forest operations, harvesting, and harvesting/silviculture interactions.  My most recent work has investigated mechanical forest fuel reduction approaches to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, utilize previously non-merchantable material, and assess the environmental effects of mechanical entry.  In addition, examples of current research areas include:

  • The consequences of alternative fuel treatment methods and machine configurations
  • New technologies for harvesting and utilizing small trees and biomass material
  • Effective strategies that integrate operational, ecological, economical, and social objectives into forest operations solutions
  • Influence of markets, operational constraints, and regulations on forest operations and small business owners
  • The advancement of forest operations and harvesting technology to compete in the global market place
  • Harvesting and silviculture interactions /optimally matching forest operations to terrain and prescription requirements
  • Precision forestry applications to increase operational productivity and value recovery
  • The role of forest operations and harvesting in the forest products supply chain
