The Be Smart (Basic Education for Senior Medicare Awareness
to Restore Trust) About Your Finances and Medical Services education
campaign is funded through a grant from the South Carolina Lieutenant
Governor’s Office on Aging. Be Smart is a cooperative effort
of Clemson Extension and the South Carolina Bureau of Senior and Long Term
Care Services, along with the Council of Governments/Area Agency on Aging.
This program empowers senior citizens to protect their financial records, Medicare
benefits, and themselves from being victims of consumer fraud. County Extension
agents teach one-third of the program, and focus on record keeping information.
The key points of the Be Smart About Your Finances and Medical Services program
are:
- Keep track of your medical / financial records
- Know where and how long to keep your records
- Let someone you trust know where and how you file your important records
- Never give your personal medical / financial information to people you don’t know
- Know where to report any fraud or scam
- Keep track of your medical appointments and bills
