Building Family Strengths:
A Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum

The Building Family Strengths curriculum focuses on the positive qualities of families and encourages them to recognize their strengths and build on them. The ten (10) Family Strengths embrace the notion that strong families: believe in open and honest Communication; experience Contentment with their lifestyle; have a sense of family History; have a sense of Humor; have a sense of Optimism about life; exhibit Resiliency during change; have high Self-esteem; have a sense of Spirituality; encourage Unity and family togetherness; and share common Values. They provide the framework for a comprehensive approach to strengthening families focusing on

The Building Family Strengths curriculum utilizes a lesson plan format with purpose, objectives, background information and numerous activities / handouts to actively engage participants in experiential learning opportunities. The curriculum is packaged for the following age groups: Preschool, Elementary, Middle / Jr. High, Senior High and Adult. In addition, the Adult module has overhead transparencies to assist in the presentation. These tools can be very helpful in train-the-trainer sessions.

Note: Because of the personal and diverse nature of Optimism and Spirituality, a variety of information is provided for exploration individually and within the family unit.
