Are you looking for something new and different to do in your classes this
year? “LifeSmarts
the Ultimate Consumer Challenge” is
an educational program that teaches young people about financial, consumer,
and marketplace issues. The competition is in a game show format that offers
participants of all backgrounds and abilities an opportunity to demonstrate
their understanding and knowledge of real-life marketplace issues and challenges.
It is a fun, creative, and exciting way to learn.
The competition is sponsored by the National Consumers League. The experience
reinforces and challenges participants knowledge in five key consumer
areas:
- Personal Finance
- Health and Safety
- Environment
- Technology and Telecommunications
- Consumer Rights and Responsibilities
LifeSmarts is an opportunity for teams of students in grades 9 - 12
to learn more about consumer issues and to develop and enhance their communication
and team building skills. Teams of 4 - 5 participants take part in the competitions.
A teacher or an adult advisor serves as the coach for each team and helps prepare
the participants. After the state competition, national finals are held in
a variety of locations to determine the national championship team. Three recent
years have seen international competitions.
In the past, Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service has served as
the state sponsor for LifeSmarts. However, Clemson no longer serves in this
capacity. The new state sponsor is is the South
Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs. For more information, contact:
