Diane Smathers, Ed.D.

Dr. Diane G. Smathers is the Associate Vice Provost and Director of the Emeritus College, as well as a Professor in Family Outreach. She is responsible for the development, operation, and management of Clemson’s Emeritus College. In this capacity, she works closely with Clemson’s 600+ retired faculty, ensuring their continued involvement with the University.

Dr. Smathers received her B.S. degree in Home Economics, magna cum laude, from the University of Kentucky and her M.S. degree in Home Economics, also from Kentucky. She received her Ed.D. from the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia, as well as a graduate certificate in Gerontology.

Prior to joining the Emeritus College in 2005, Dr. Smathers served for three years in Off-Campus, Distance and Continuing Education, where she administered the Clemson office at the University Center of Greenville. From 1994 - 2002, she served as Department Chair and Assistant Director of Extension and Research at Clemson. She previously held positions at the University of Georgia and the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Smathers is the author of over 100 publications and the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Commemorative Lecturer for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. In 2003, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Kentucky. She is active in a number of associations, and has served as the National President of Phi Upsilon Omicron honor society (1992 - 1994).
