The Department of Genetics and Biochemistry offers the B.S. degree in Genetics or Biochemistry. Students majoring in genetics and biochemistry take a variety of courses in the sciences (e.g. general, organic, quantitaive and physical chemistry, physics, and introductory biology) which prepare them for further study.Among the major courses required by the department is a full year of research. GEN/BIOCHEM 491 provide opportunities for students to carry out independent research projects under the guidance of Clemson faculty mentors. Students learn the latest cutting edge methodologies in biochemical and genetic research while improving observation and communication skills. Faculty mentors receive the opportunity to share excitement about their work with an enthusiastic undergraduate.
At the end of each semester of 491, the students are required to present their results to the Departmental faculty, staff, and students - 491 Day. Our current and recent undergraduates repeatedly affirm that 491 is or has been there most important course at Clemson.Graduates of the B.S. programs in Genetics or Biochemistry have matriculated into programs in the biomedical and bioengineering sciences, as well as professional programs such as medicine, pharmacology, and top graduate programs.
