Cooperating for Agriculture
| Name | Carlin C. Munnerlyn | | Situation | The year 2004 ends a five-year cycle for Private Pesticide Applicator License holders. To renew the license, every Private Pesticide Applicator must earn five Continuing Certification Hours (CCH) by December 2004. Georgetown County has approximately 80 applicators needing credits and Williamsburg County has over 200 applicators needing credits. The Extension Service is mainly responsible for providing CCH to the applicators.
| | Response | Realizing the strong demand for CCHs, the County agent decided to get a jump start by providing applicators credits in the spring. She also wanted to devise a way to provide interesting and useful programs and not rely entirely on the prerecorded tapes. The agent contacted three reputable Certified Crop Advisors and the Williamsburg County agent and asked them to help by developing a one-hour lesson related to pesticide use. With the help of these professionals, five classes were held, offering three CCHs each in various locations. The instructors only had to teach one lesson twice, making the program relatively simple for everyone.
| | Impact | Qualified and interesting speakers presenting current information recertified sixty applicators. These programs generated $2,100 for the Extension Service. This was a cooperative effort between Extension and private businesses, working together to help the agricultural community.
