Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Project
- Attend
a summer course on with working with science and mathematics
classrooms in the middle schools given by project PIs.
- Attend
a summer course on standards-based mathematics and science
curricula given by project PIs.
- Attend
a summer seminar with mentor middle school teachers and project
PIs.
- Spend
a minimum of 15 hours per week during the school year working
in an assigned middle school science or mathematics classroom(s)
distributed as follows: 10 hours per week in the classroom(s)
assisting teachers and students as a content expert and 5
hours in preparation, conferences with mentor teacher(s) and
attending faculty meetings.
- Attend
biweekly seminars during the school year with mentor teachers
and project PIs.
- Keep
an update and detailed journal of all activities for the project.
This should especially emphasize interactions with teachers
and students in the assigned middle school classroom(s). This
database will be used for seminar discussions, for reflective
papers to be submitted to the PI and for project reporting.
Journals are to be submitted electronically to the principal
investigators each Friday.
- Submit
a one-page progress report monthly to the PI. This should
summarize significant accomplishments and provide reflections
and recommendations for the future.
- Keep
a log of your hours working with the teacher. This log is
to be submitted monthly to the PI's and signed by the mentor
teacher.
- Communicate
and interact regularly with project PIs (particularly with
assigned PI or Co-PI) regarding effectiveness of school logistics
and local arrangements in meeting the objectives of project.
- Conduct
yourself professionally and dress professionally when in the
public schools. Do not engage socially in any way with students
or teachers at the schools.
- Abide
by any school rules for guests and/or faculty at the school
site assigned. This also applies to any specific protocol(s)
for entering and leaving the school.
- Attend
professional conferences, such as the South Carolina Science
Council Convention, the National Association of Biology Teachers
meeting, etc. as directed by assigned PI or Co-PI.
- Provide
assistance and expertise in science and math content to other
educators or classes as requested by mentor teachers or project
PIs.
