Master Tree Farmer - Greenville County
| Name | Danny Howard | | Situation | Forestry and Wildlife impact on Greenville’s economy is over $3 million due to timber harvest, land lease, purchase of agricultural equipment and supplies, and tourism costs. There are limited educational resources available to landowners on timber management. Growth in the area is another concern for landowners. Greenville County landowners, land managers, timber managers and other outdoor enthusiasts were interested in learning how to integrate timber management objectives into their land management considerations. Participants would learn how to implement management practices that will benefit major southern wildlife species. | | Response | Forestry speakers from all over the U.S. & Clemson University Extension gave presentations on timber and land management. Greenville County was one of many sites that offered this long-distance educational program. This seminar was the only education course offered that timber managers could learn the best management timber practices for hardwood and pine trees. These were excellent introductory courses in how timber management is practiced in the South. | | Impact | Evaluations were conducted after each session. Thirty-nine landowners and managers completed both classes and 98% indicated they increased their knowledge of wildlife management. Thirty-seven individuals adopted new practices. In addition, new clientele were introduced to the Extension educational program through these seminars. Because of the master tree farmer and master wildlife classes over the past four years, a Forestry and Wildlife Society educational group was created to continue the educational process. Fifteen landowners have established recommended food plots for deer and turkey. There were over 1300 students nationwide that took part in this long distance education course.
