Visual Identity Guidelines
Stationery

Stationery is the primary means of establishing Clemson's image at the personal level. Letterhead, envelopes, business cards and related items should reflect the same standards of consistency for all University units, on campus as well as off campus, and should be printed in a quality manner.

All stationery follows a standard format featuring the Clemson University wordmark or athletic wordmark as the primary design element and the University seal as the subordinate element for all academic and most administrative units. (See "Special Cases" below.) The name, address and phone number of the unit are set in Goudy and placed under the seal.

Illustrative elements such as drawings of plants, animals, insects or buildings may not be used on stationery items. Elements such as these weaken the consistency of the identity program.

Special Cases: Units that have an authorized logo may use that logo as the subordinate element on stationery items. See "Other Authorized Subordinate Symbols" to verify which logos may be used on stationery items. Some authorized symbols may not be able to be used in their entirety. For assistance with the integration of subordinate marks onto stationery items, contact the Department of Publications and Promotion.

Colors: Due to their highly public profile, it is recommended that formal academic stationery items be printed in two colors of ink, purple (PMS 268) and orange (PMS 158). Athletic stationery may be printed only in blue (reflex blue) and orange (PMS 165). To help defray the costs of internal or mass mailings, a less formal one-color option is available for both academic and athletic stationery.

Orders: To maintain consistency in design and color, and for speed and cost efficiency, orders for official stationery must be placed with University Printing Services, (864) 656-2041. Printing Services is the only vendor authorized to print official University stationery. University funds may be used to pay for stationery only if it is printed by Printing Services and if it follows the approved format. Off-campus units that traditionally arrange for printing locally should contact the Department of Publications and Promotion before proceeding.

Personalization: Business cards are the only stationery items that may contain personalized information. Your Clemson business card is intended to provide University business information only. If your University position requires that you be on call evenings and weekends, you may include personal information (home phone, fax, email, etc.) to be printed on the reverse of the card at additional cost. Illustrative elements such as drawings of plants, animals, insects or buildings may not be used on business cards. Elements such as these weaken the consistency of the identity program. University funds may be used to purchase business cards that follow the approved format only.
