Masters of Education — Secondary Education

Overview

The purpose of a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Secondary Education at Clemson University is to assist secondary school teachers in increasing their competency in subject content, pedagogy, and research. Consequently, the program has practical and theoretical work in education and in the selected academic content area. There are four content emphases from which the student may select: English, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Studies.

Admission Requirements

  • Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Admission to the Clemson Graduate School
    • Meet all requirements of the Graduate School
    • Copy of valid teaching certificate
    • Competitive GRE scores

Program Requirements

Degree requirements
The degree requires a minimum of thirty-six (36) semester hours in graduate courses with a GPR of at least 3.0, of which at least eighteen (18) hours must be from 700 level or higher numbered courses. A minimum of fifteen (15) semester hours in the specified professional education courses and a minimum of eighteen (18) hours of graduate courses in the content area of emphasis (English, Mathematics, Natural Sciences or Social Studies) or in approved related areas are required. All course work must be completed within six calendar years prior to the date on which the degree is to be awarded. This includes up to 12 hours of approved graduate work that may be transferred from another institution.

I. Required Education Courses (15 - 18 hrs)

ED 860: Classroom Action Research (3 hours)
EDF 778: Experimental and Nonexperimental Research Methods in Education (3 hours)
EDF 808: Educational Tests and Measurement (3 hrs)
EDSEC 765: Secondary School Curriculum (3 hrs)
EDSEC 803: Advanced Methods of Teaching in the Secondary School (3)
** READ 864: Teaching Secondary School Reading ** If the student has successfully completed an undergraduate content reading course, this requirement is waived.

II. Content Emphasis Courses (18-21 hrs)

A minimum of 18 hours of coursework at the 600, 700 or 800 level will be completed in English, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, or Social Studies. These courses must be approved by the Advisory Committee.

  • Students must complete EDSEC 841, 842, 843 or 844.Students in mathematics must also complete EDSEC 637 unless a similar undergraduate course was completed.
  • Appropriate courses in given areas of emphasis are:
    • English: composition, literature, drama, theater, communication and visual arts, technical writing, or graphic communications
    • Mathematics: mathematics, experimental statistics, or computer science
    • Natural Sciences: astronomy, biology, botany, chemistry, entomology, genetics, geology, microbiology, physics, zoology, agronomy, environmental sciences, as well as limited courses in health sciences, horticulture, food sciences, plant pathology, veterinary sciences, wildlife or fisheries biology
    • Social Studies: cultural studies, economics, geography, history, political sciences, psychology, or sociology

III. Electives (0-3 hours)

To complete the 36 hours, students may enroll in an approved elective. Recommended electives include additional content courses, ED 605, EDF 680, EDF 682, EDF 690, EDF 701, EDF 702, ED 837, and ED 838. The Advisory Committee may also approve an elective not listed here.
