Clemson University, Edwards Hall Nursing Lab, 2nd Floor
The Clemson University School of Nursing hosted its 3rd annual Alumni Day on April 5, 2008. You can see images from the day's events here.
Attendance at this year's alumni/ae day more than doubled that of last year. We had 19 alumni whose graduation dates spanned 3 decades, two guests of alumni, and several faculty members, some of whom are also alums. This year, the focus of the day was on Genomics in Nursing and included a presentation by Dr. Julie Eggert concerning how new knowledge in genetics is influencing health and health care. We were also privileged to have a hands-on experience in the DNA Learning Lab located on campus. All participants were able to "fingerprint" DNA in a process similar to that used in forensic science. As you can see in the photos below, everyone was thoroughly engaged and enjoyed the activities of the day. We want to thank Renea Hardwick of the DNA Learning Lab for accommodating us on a Saturday afternoon. Feedback about this portion of the day was overwhelmingly positive.
Lunch was provided in the new Clinical Learning and Research Center. Alums that had not seen the Center were impressed with how closely the area mimics a real clinical setting and with the cutting-edge technology, especially the Human Patient Simulators. Many expressed a little "jealousy" at not having had such advantages in their educational experiences.
We continue to solicit alumni input about how to enhance the School's relationship with our graduates and to work to implement those ideas. One strong suggestion was earlier notification of the date, such as a "save the date" card, so alumni can begin early to make plans to attend. Another is to highlight alumni achievements on the website and in the Clemson World Publication. We are working to implement these suggestions.
