HEHD Student Spotlight: Anna Fulmer

HEHD Student Spotlight

Anna FulmerName: Anna Fulmer

School or Department: Education

Major: Elementary Education

Minor: Psychology

Why did you choose your particular area of study? I always knew that I enjoyed working with children, but more than that I wanted to help them grow and make a difference. Elementary Education seemed like the right fit.  As I became more immersed with working with children in the school system, at camp, and in my day to day interactions, I knew that I was meant to help children.

What skills have you learned that will allow you to affect change in our society? I feel like my learning at Clemson extends from outside of the classroom.  I have learned how to resolve conflicts and listen and talk with people from all walks of life.  I believe that what is going to truly impact the world is not necessarily  how much we know, but how we treat people and actually listen to hear the problems of the world before changing things instantaneously.

Which member of the HEHD faculty will you remember most? Why?
I will always remember Dr. Smith.  Dr. Smith has gone above and beyond to help me with my career and is always available to talk.  In addition, I was on her creative inquiry that studied brain dominance of children.  This studied really helped me see how the research and skills we are learning at Clemson can translate into the school system.

What is your most memorable event from your time in college?  I do not know if I have one memory that stands out above the others, but if I had to say a specific time period, it would be my first semester of freshmen year.  Freshmen year challenged me both intellectually and socially.  I met so many people who really challenged me.  It was also a time of many changes.  However, the people at Clemson were so loving and compassionate.  Because of the positive environment, I was able to stand on my own two feet and grow.

What would you do differently if you had to start over as a freshman? I would have studied abroad for a semester.  I love traveling and wish I had experienced life immersed in a different culture.

What are your goals after graduation? I am not quite sure about what my future is but what I do know is that I am called to work with children.  Next year, I hope to go on to graduate school and eventually get a job.

Why did you choose Clemson University?
I grew up a Clemson fan.  From an early age, I attended football games, but when it came time to choose a college, I was not sure if Clemson was the place for me.  As my senior year progressed, I realized that Clemson was unlike any other place because of its spirit.  I love the community and traditions at Clemson, and I knew I could not find it anywhere else.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies; succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; give the world the best you have anyway. You see, in the final analysis, its between you and God; it was never between you and them anyway.  ~ Mother Theresa
