Student planting
Miles Graves, a Horticulture major at Clemson University, designed and installed a courtyard garden featuring plants with seasonal intrest and outdoor reading spaces.
Annuals and perennials will provide color and texture to the garden and will allow elementary students to participate in gardening experences as they choose annuals for future seasons.
Student planting

Large existing azaleas were transplanted to establish planting in scale with the courtyard and architecture.
The courtyard is surrounded by a brick building on three sides. This creates a microclimate enabling plants like this Loquat tree (Eriobotrya japonica) to survive out of its normal hardiness range. Mulch will be added as an important final step in the installation process.

Improved courtyard
A Japanese maple will provide intersting color and form as an understory tree. The existing red maple will provide energy efficiency for the building as it grows to shade roofs, walls, and windows in the summer.
