Joe Bowden working outdoors My study attempts to combine field, chamber, and controlled environment measurements of nursery and forest structure and physiological function with genetically constrained models to quantify responses at the tree level.  More Specifically, I am attempting to (1) apply an enhanced forest canopy model that integrates recent advances in the understanding of physiological processes such as the dynamics of tree biochemical response to elevated atmospheric temperature, CO2, and soil moisture deficit; (2) validate model estimates under controlled and natural conditions; (3) apply the advanced feedback model to estimate species/community composition-specific transpiration response to climate change;  (4) extrapolate simulated responses to watersheds; and (5) compare the estimates of transpiration with measured sap flow to test hypotheses about genetic constraints.
