*Heirloom Vegetable Production—A Year in Review (75 min.)
Dr. David Bradshaw, Professor of Horticulture, Department of Horticulture, Clemson University (May 19, 2005)

Dr. Bradshaw takes you through the year of his sustainable 2.5 acre garden located in the SC Botanical Garden.  He speaks about bed preparation and planting, cultural practices, trellising methods, biological controls, and summertime maintenance.


About the Speaker:  Dr. David W. Bradshaw has been with the Department of Horticulture since April 1977.  He has served in teaching, research and Extension and as Director of the Botanical Garden from 1977-1991.
      Dr. Bradshaw teaches courses in plant propagation, vegetable crops, and plant taxonomy laboratory.  Also, he is the naturalist for the Botanical Garden.



*An Innovative Look at Light:  It’s More Than Just Flipping A Switch (75 min.)
Amy Enfield, Ph.D. candidate in Floriculture, Department of Horticulture, Clemson University (May 26, 2005)

Ms. Enfield discusses the importance of light for plant growth and development.  She addresses issues such as light quality, measuring light intensity, and photoperiod.  Different light sources are discussed as well as recommendations for indoor lighting.

About the Speaker:  Ms. Enfield has a BS and MS from Michigan State University.  She has 6 years of retail greenhouse experience and was a research technician (7 months) in Guatemala prior to coming to Clemson University.

Patrick McMillan, Botanist and Curator of the Clemson University Herbarium (June 16, 2005)

Mr. McMillan talks about botanical nomenclature or the scientific naming of plants.

About the Speaker:  Patrick McMillan is currently the curator of the Clemson University Herbarium.  He has worked as a professional field biologist for the past 12 years.  Plant community ecology and monocot taxonomy are his areas of expertise.  Mr. McMillan is a member of the South Carolina Native Plant Society.
      He is a long-time member of the Carolina Vegetation Survey, which is a group of professional botanists dedicated to surveying and classifying the natural communities of the Carolinas.
     Mr. McMillan currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and serves as a consultant for this department as well as many other government agencies.
      His research in South Carolina has added more than 60 species to the list of plants known from South Carolina and he has been involved in the discovery and description of many plant species which are new to science.
