Scholarships & Finances

You've decided that you want to study abroad--that's great! You may now be looking for sources to fund this important academic experience. First, you should check with the Clemson Financial Aid office, as well as start thinking about your personal budget.

You may also be interested in investigating the following scholarships.  Be sure to start the application process as early as possible and check the individual websites for deadlines. Often application materials are due 6 months are more ahead of the start of your program.

ACC Scholarships: Spring 2010, Summer 2010, and Fall 2010
The ACC-IAC (ACC-Interinstitutional Academic Collaborative) brings together the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) institutions in support of academics and other collaborative initiatives.  Funded by a portion of the revenue from the ACC football championship, the IAC emphasizes international and global affairs, especially study abroad and research in areas of the world where it is not feasible for a single university to sustain a full program.  For more information, see:  http://www.acciac.org/  Funding is currently available for students who are studying abroad in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2010. Application deadline for the Spring 2010 is November 20th, 2009; for Summer or Fall 2010 Programs the deadline is March 31, 2010.

Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
The Institute of International Education awards Boren Scholarships for undergraduate students and Boren Fellowships for graduate students.Boren Awards provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students to add important international and language components to their educations. These scholarships are to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin American, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholarships (for undergraduates) provide up to $20,000 for an academic year's study abroad. Boren Fellowships (for graduate students) provide up to $30,000 for language study and international research. For 2010-2011 awards, the application deadline for the Boren Fellowship is January 28, 2010 and the deadline for the Boren Scholarship is February 10, 2010. The on-campus deadline for Boren Scholarships is December 15, 2009. Boren Scholarships Info Sessions are usually held in the Fall Semester.

Bowman Scholarships
The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) awards Bowman Scholarships to undergraduate students who wish to study in a Third World area such as certain countries in Asia, Africa, or Latin American. The grants cover the transportation cost from site to site.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
This scholarship provides a stipend for undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Students in any major are eligible and Japanese language ability is not required. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Selection is based on academic potential and financial need.

British Council - UK Scholarship Listings
The British Council provides a list of scholarships available to U.S. citizens for study at universities in the UK. This list includes both graduate and undergraduate scholarships.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX)
Provides fellowships for students and recent graduates who are interested in living, studying, and interning in Germany for a full-year.   CBYX is sponsored by the US and German governments for applicants in all career fields between the ages of 18-24, and does not require any prior German language knowledge.  Applicants in business, vocational, technical, engineering, scientific, and agricultural fields are especially encouraged to apply. Application deadline is December 1, 2009 for the program beginning in July 2010.

DAAD Scholarship Programs for Study and Research in Germany
DAAD grants are available to faculty and students in Canada and the United States to participate in various academic activities. In general, applicants need to be U.S. or Canadian citizens or permanent residents. In certain cases foreign nationals enrolled or employed at universities in North America may also be eligible to apply.

Scholarship directory contains funding opportunities for multicultural students, community college students, and university students, as well as high school students. Students can save scholarships they are interested in, ask for reminders by email two weeks prior to deadlines, and forward scholarships to friends.

College of Engineering and Science Scholarships: Spring 2010
The College of Engineering and Science invites students studying abroad during the Spring 2010 semester to apply for financial assistance. The CoES International Committee will review applications, and select recipients based on a short essay, financial need, and academic performance. Students who are selected to receive funding will be required to write a short letter thanking the donor and explaining how they intend to make use of the funds. After completion of the study abroad program, students will write a short report on their international experience and the effect the scholarship has had on their education. This report will be forwarded to the donor.  Applications (pdf) are due by October 30, 2009.

Freeman Scholarships - Awards for Study in Asia [Note: Spring 2009 competition cycle concludes these scholarships]
Freeman scholarships are available for students wishing to study in a number of Asian countries. These include, but are not limited to Japan, China, Korea, Singapore and Thailand.  Regrettably, Freeman Scholarships are no longer available. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
This scholarship is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education. The scholarship is available to students with financial need and encourages applications from students who are underrepresented in study abroad.
Note: The Gilman International Scholarship program now includes additional funding for students studying Critical Need Languages. Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement for a total possible award of up to $8,000. Undergraduates who are U.S. citizens receiving federal Pell Grant funding are eligible to apply for the Gilman Scholarship.

GTOS (Guide to Online Schools) Study Abroad Scholarship
An unconventional scholarship that judges students based on their innovation and reasoning.  The scholarship application asks students to answer a series of open-ended, personal, and thought provoking questions.  Applicants must be legal residents of the United States, at least 16 years old, and enrolled in a school-related study abroad program.  There are no minimum requirements regarding the duration of travel.

Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship
This is a highly competitive fellowship (3 per year) offered through the College of William and Mary. The fellowship provides an eleven-week summer service opportunity with the U.S. Department of State plus a $5,000 stipend at one of three posts: the U.S. Embassy in Paris, the U.S. Embassy in London or the Office of the Secretary of State in Washington.

Hispanic Scholarship Awards Program - State Farm
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) selects Hispanic college students to receive State Farm Companies Foundation-sponsored scholarships. Recipients are selected for academic accomplishment and demonstrated leadership skills. For application and selection criteria, contact the Hispanic Scholarship Fund:

This resource allows you to search by country or subject to find study abroad funding information. Includes scholarships, fellowships, and grants for undergraduate as well as graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral research. 

Institute of International Education Grants

The Institute of International Education manages over 250 programs for international study and offers numerous grants and awards for these programs. You should carefully review the IIE website to see if you qualify for one of these programs and scholarships.

Inter-American Foundation Fellowships for PhD Candidates
These fellowhips support dissertation research in Latin America and the Caribbean undertaken by students who have advanced to Ph.D. candidacy in a university in the United States. Fellows must be U.S. citizens or citizens of the independent Latin American or Caribbean countries. Proficiency in the language(s) appropriate to the research proposal is required.

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarships
The Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships for academic study in Japan to foreign students interested in deepening their understanding of the Japanese language, Japanese affairs and Japanese culture.

International Trade Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded by the S.C. International Trade Conference to students with a proven interest in international trade or a related area.  Applications are normally due in early May. 

Killam Fellowship Program
This is a scholarship program which allows undergraduate students from accredited degree granting colleges and universities to participate in a bi-national residential exchange program between Canada and the United States of America. Scholarship recipients spend either one semester or a full academic year as an exchange student in the other country. The scholarships are $10,000, and students can apply to any of the participating Canadian Universities. The on-campus deadline is: January 8, 2010. Contact either Dr. Teresa Wise in the Office of International Affairs or Dr. Lesly Temesvari in the Department of Biological Sciences.

National Security Education Program
This scholarship seeks to increase the ability of Americans to communicate and compete globally by understanding the languages and cultures of other countries. Each year, NSEP offers American undergraduate and graduate students scholarships to enhance their understanding of cultures and languages critical to U.S. national security. These scholarships are valid for study in countries outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Open to U.S. citizens in a degree-granting program.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants
The Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi offers 50 Study Abroad Grants of $1000 each.  Students do not have to be members of Phi Kappa Phi. 

Rhodes Scholarships
Rhodes Scholars study for two and, with special permission, three years at Oxford University in Britain. Study can be in any field and must lead to a degree. Study can be at the graduate or undergraduate level. Some Rhodes Scholars study the last two years of an undergraduate major. Others do graduate study. The Rhodes pays for tuition, fees, travel to and from home to Oxford, and an allowance that is sufficient to pay living costs during the academic year and vacation periods.

Rotary International Scholarships
Rotary International offers very generous scholarships through its Ambassadorial Scholarships Program. It is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. Visit the Rotary International website for more information and applications.
