Reid Andrew Addy, student — October 28, 2009

Reid Andrew Addy, 20, a junior turfgrass major from Camden, died Oct. 28 in Clemson.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, at First Baptist Church, 1201 Broad Street in Camden. Burial will follow in Quaker Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 30, 5-7 p.m. at the home, 614 Cantey Parkway in Camden.
 
An avid hunter and golfer, Addy became the youngest Club Champion at Camden Country Club at age 16. He worked part-time at Cross Creek Country Club in Seneca.

Addy is the son of Connie Cox Addy of Camden and Glenn Addy of Surry, Va.

He is also survived by stepfather, Johan Guilliams of Camden; half brother, Jeremy Addy of Chapin; maternal grandmother, Geneva R. Cox of Camden; paternal grandparents, Julian and Lou Addy of Chapin; aunts and uncles, Deborah Cox of Atlanta, Becky Cutler of Camden, Donna and Dickie Pittman, of Surry, Va. and Gene and Donna Addy of Rockford, Ill. and many beloved cousins. He was predeceased by his grandfather, Dickie Cox.

Retiree Charles E. Kirkwood Jr. — October 24, 2009

Charles Edward Kirkwood, Jr., 96, a retired faculty members and widower of Emma Lou Wigington Kirkwood, died Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Richmond, Va., he was the son of the late Charles E. and Norma Earl Gates Kirkwood.

Kirkwood, believed by his family to be the oldest living retired Clemson professor,  joined the faculty of Clemson College in 1937 teaching math, physics, electrical engineering and later computer science.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, retired from the U.S. Army Reserve, a member of Clemson United Methodist Church and an avid amateur radio and railroading ethusiast.

Surviving are a son, Charles E. Kirkwood and wife, Rita, of Alexandria, Ala.; a daughter, Cynthia Jane Kirkwood Marlow and husband, Steve, of Travelers Rest; grandson, John Andrew Kirkwood and wife Debbie; granddaughter, Katherine Suzanne Kirkwood Ray and husband Heath; great-grandchildren, Emma Katherine Ray, Zachary Coleman Ray and Luke Edward Ray.

A memorial service was held Oct. 28 at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, preceded by a private committal.

Retiree Landon Miller – October 4, 2009

Landon Carl Miller, 72, husband of Joan Carey Miller, died Sunday, Oct. 4, at the North Greenville Hospital. Miller, a Clemson alumnus, worked for 31 years as a member of the research and extension faculty in the horticulture department.

A native of Spartanburg County, Miller was the son of the late Carl C. Miller and Mildred Reeder Miller. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Clemson and a Ph.D. from Auburn University. In addition to serving on the Clemson faculty, Miller served as the executive secretary of the Carolina Gold Superintendents Association for 26 years. He also served as the executive secretary of the S.C. Sod Producers Association and was a volunteer with the S.C. Botanical Garden. He was a member of Clemson First Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by son Steven Landon Miller and wife Stacey of Clemson; daughter Kimberly M. Wilson and husband Russell of Boiling Springs, N.C.; brothers Michael Miller of Seneca and David Miller of Franklin, N.C.; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother William Miller and sister Kathyrn Stroble.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the Clemson First Baptist Church with burial to follow in Woodland Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home.

Retiree James H. Nicholson – October 2, 2009

James Harvey Nicholson, husband of Meredith Andrews Nicholson, died Friday, Oct. 2, at Oconee Medical Center. Nicholson retired after a long teaching career in the mathematical sciences department. He was the first Honors Professor to be selected by students in the Calhoun Honors College, and he was a member of the American Mathematical Society.

A native of Texas, he was the son of the late Morris E. and Lottie Chancellor Nicholson. Prior to coming to Clemson, he taught at the University of Texas. He was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and served in the U. S. Navy. He was also a long time member of the Western Carolina Sailing Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Harvey Nicholson of Clemson.

Graveside services will be held today at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church cemetery in Pendleton. The family will receive friends at a reception following the service at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Parish Hall in Clemson.

Susan Rushton, recent retiree — September 11, 2009

Susan Sarah Pruitt Rushton, 53, recently retired from records and registration, died early Friday, Sept. 11, She was employed as an administration assistant for three years.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Pendleton United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at The McDougald Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12.

A native of Anderson, Rushton received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Wesleyan University.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen T. Rushton; a daughter, Stephanie Rushton of Beaufort, S.C.; a son, Geoffrey Rushton and wife, Jessica of Pendleton, S.C.; grandson, Wesley Rushton, also of Pendleton; and one sister, Nelwyn P. Landreth of Anderson.

Donovan Xavier Jones, student — August 23, 2009

Donovan Xavier Jones, 21, a senior financial management major from Sumter, died Aug. 23, while swimming with friends at Issaqueena Lake.

Jones was a Clemson National Scholar and business manager for Taps, the Clemson yearbook.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Sumter High School, where his father was an assistant principal.

The casket will be placed in the school auditorium at 10 a.m. for viewing. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter. The family will also receive friends this week at their home and on Friday, Aug. 28, 6-8 p.m., at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 South Main Street in Sumter, S.C.

A campus memorial services to celebrate and honor his life will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Tillman Hall auditorium.

“Donovan loved Clemson, and Clemson loved him,” said William Lasser, director of the Clemson National Scholars Program who was invited to speak at Jones’ hometown funeral in Sumter. “He was part of the glue that holds the Clemson family together. Clemson and the many people who knew him will never forget him.”

Born in Suffolk, England, Jones was the firstborn son of Gregory and Jacqueline Purnell Jones and the brother of Ryan Jones.

Danielle Rae Fleming, student — August 1, 2009

Danielle Rae Fleming, 20, a junior mathematical sciences major from Glen Ridge, N.J., died Aug. 1 at Oconee Medical Center. Her illness was later confirmed as bacterial meningitis.

The viewing will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Martin’s Home for Service, 48 Elm St., Montclair, N.J. The viewing will be followed by a service and internment at Rosedale Cemetery.

A campus memorial services to celebrate and honor her life will be held at 4 p.m. on Sept. 10, on the Military Heritage Plaza, adjacent to Tillman Hall.

"Danielle was a member of Clemson's WISE and PEER programs, and I could tell from meeting some of those close to her that she was a serious student, a cherished friend and a much-loved daughter," said Joy Smith, associate vice president for Student Affairs and dean of students.
