North Green project under way Oct. 26

Construction will begin next week on a mid-campus improvement project that will require the removal of three decaying trees and six months of construction.

Members of the Class of 1960 raised funds for landscaping of the North Green — the open area bounded by the Carillon Garden, Martin Hall, the Outdoor Theater and Brackett Hall. The area will feature a terraced green, new sidewalks, lighting, benches and improved access routes. The project budget includes funds for project management, which means Clemson’s facilities department will be reimbursed for costs incurred.

Construction will begin about Oct. 26 and is scheduled for completion about May 20.

The construction will restrict pedestrian traffic in the area and will require closing three parking spaces near Sikes Hall for heavy equipment to access the construction site. Disruptions will be kept to a minimum; however, periodic noise, dust and traffic restrictions can be expected.

Related tree removal

Three white oak trees will be removed as part of this project:

•  One tree has lost its bark on approximately a third of the trunk surface and decay is present at the base. This tree also suffered root damage during a sewer line repair three years ago.

•  A second large white oak located adjacent to the Carillon Garden has had dead wood removed many times and is in a spiral of decline with significant trunk decay. There are two sidewalks under the spread of this tree, creating a significant safety hazard to pedestrians.

•  A smaller oak has large girdling roots that will eventually strangle the trunk and/or other roots.  This tree also has a co-dominant stem of two or more trunks on a single leader that causes weak, poorly connected limbs that may easily split.

Everyone is encouraged to observe barricades and construction signs and avoid this area while work is under way.
