4-H Youth and Volunteers Embrace The Community

Name

Deon S. Legette

Situation

Community Service is one of the emphasis areas of the 4-H Youth Development program. Youth are encouraged to give back to their communities, which contribute to their development productive, useful, and desirable citizens.

Response

An excellent community service opportunity surfaced for Kershaw County youth during the grand opening of the new Tractor Supply Co. in Camden. A team of 4-Hers, volunteers, parents and Extension staff were present to educate the community about 4-H and to bring additional awareness to the program. Youth and volunteers were actively involved in enrolling new members, selling food and beverages, and collecting donations for the 4-H families in Louisiana and Mississippi that were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Other examples of county 4-H community service included assisting at the county farmer's market, food and clothing drives, beautification projects, and donation of toiletries to nursing homes. The Communty Day proved to be successful. Sponsors for the day donated food, beverages, supplies and money to the 4-H program, valued at over $1200.00.

Impact

Proceeds from the food sales went to the county 4-H fund to support various 4-H activities. Five new volunteers and 12 new 4-Hers were enrolled during the day, and over $250.00 was collected and sent to the 4-H foundations in Louisiana and Mississippi.
