Large Animal Emergency Rescue

What is Large Animal Emergency Response?

Large animal emergency response is that disaster phase where specialized training and equipment may be required to rescue a large animal such as horses or cattle.

Although the large animal owner is responsible for the mitigation, preparedness and recovery phases during a natural or manmade disaster, most animal owners do not have the training or equipment necessary to safely rescue a large animal in an emergency.

The purpose of the South Carolina Large Animal Response Teams is to maintain a group of trained volunteers in each of the three areas of the state capable of safely rescuing a large animal without endangering human life or compromising public safety.

The response time will vary depending on the nature of the disaster. In emergencies where the large animal can sustain serious injury, may endanger human life or compromise public safety, response time will be from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the nature and location of the emergency (trailer accident, emergency in a remote area, etc.)

In case of a large animal emergency that does not pose an imminent threat to either the large animal's life or public safety, (flood, post-hurricane or tornado response, etc.) the response time may vary from a few hours to one or two days.

An important function of the Large Animal Emergency Response Team will be to assist other county agencies (Sheriff, EPD, Fire Department, Animal Control, etc.) with any emergencies involving large animals. A long-term goal is to train large animal emergency response teams for each county.
