Situation

Operation Military Kids offers a daycare/education program for National Guard men and women across the state who are being briefed on their upcoming mission. One of these such events was being held at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.I, Katie Berry,(Laurens County 4-H Agent) was contacted by Mrs. Beverly Connelly about having Laurens County senior 4-H'ers and 4-H Volunteers there to help.

Response

I rounded up three volunteers and one senior 4-H'er. It was fair season and most of the Laurens County 4-H community was busy. Together the 4-H volunteers and agents provide child care for the soldier's children while they were being briefed on their upcoming mission. Our goal was to make this day as pleasant as possible for those children whose father or mother was about to be sent away. We played games, made soap, made a love knot blanket and much more. One of those volunteers was Mrs. Marilyn Easter. She was a 4-H'er in her younger years and has been a volunteer for numerous years. She is now telling a beautiful story about the day we helped.

Impact

The day was filled with emotional ups and downs. After getting to know the children and their families, it was sad to think about the hard time that was ahead of them. We tried to keep our minds and the childrens' minds off the depressing subject and we had a great time. At the end of the day, we were reflecting on everything that happened. It was extremely touching to help these families at such an emotional time. While we were talking, the conversation turned to Marilyn, who confessed that this event was the most memorable 4-H event she had ever attended. This was amazing. She has been to so many 4-H events all over the country. She has been involved with 4-H for more than 20 years and out of all the events this one was the most memorable, the event were she touched the live of so many soldiers and their families, but they also touched her heart as well.
