2010 Suggestions

Subject: Trash
Suggestion: There are gnats flying around the trash on the fourth floor because they are full of food and garbage. Do they ever get emptied?  It's gross!

Response:  As soon as I got this, I placed a call to the custodial supervisor who came over very quickly.  Thanks for your quick reporting!

Subject: Hours

Suggestion: There are soo many graduate students in Clemson Unv who does not go anywhere for this short break.  Remember graduate students do not have

whole spring break, we had only Friday day off and may need library.  i think for the breaks, you should keep library open with regular schedule with less employee
for you, and even reference desk may be closed but library should be open for study. may be you can open it with the card access only for those days instead off
closing library completely..same problems happens for us (foreign graduate student). we don't use most of the holidays which is special for Americans. our American
Friends usually go somewhere so they don't mind we (foreign students) are here. library should be open for those days with Clemson ID access..

Response:  We'll take it under advisement when planning hours for 2011 but please understand that Cooper closes during days of extreme low usage so that we can
staff for other busy times.

Response:  Walter Wilson, Security Coordinator, took care of it.

Subject:  Noise and 2nd floor (1 of 2)

Suggestion: I have noticed lately that the floors designated to be quiet floors, especially the second floor, are becoming louder and louder. I personally choose to go to the second or first floor so I can work in quiet, however I have not been able to do this for about 3-4 weeks. I think it is imperative that the quiet floor rules are enforced because some students like me cannot concentrate while a group is talking next to them. I have actually gone up and asked groups to be quiet but it has been too hard lately because so many people are constantly talking.

Response:  Thanks for the comments.  During spring break new signage will go up and we hope it will be more clear what the quiet policy is.  Part of 2nd floor is designated for quiet individual study and part is designated for group but ALL must be considerate of others.  Please watch for new signage and enforcement.  Again, thanks.

Subject: Restroom

Suggestion:  Sinks in restroom are unsanitary.  How can I turn off the water after I wash my hands if there are no paper towels without getting germy?  Makes No sense!

Response:  We made a conscious decision a few years ago to remove the paper towel dispensers in the 4th floor restrooms and utilize hand dryers instead.  It makes for a cleaner overall restroom.  Custodians work very hard and check the restrooms at least twice daily and clean each one thoroughly once daily.  A 2nd shift person is on duty at 4:00pm and also checks the restrooms throughout the evening.  If you find a specific problem please report it at the time to the Circulation Desk and we'll do our best to address it.  You are, of course, free to use the other restrooms  on 1, 2 or 5 if you prefer paper hand towels.

Subject: Board at entrance

Suggestion:  On large board at entrance post question on ways to make printing better.

Response:  Your comment was forwarded to the Creative Inquiry Class.  Thanks!

Subject:  Book search

Suggestion: Book was not in its home location.

Response:  We hope that you reported this problem to the Circulation Desk.  We'll be happy to put a search on it and can order it for you from another institution if not found.

Subj:  Hand Dryers

Suggestion: I appreciate all that you have recently done to improve the layout and design of the library in particular, the enhancements to the new "study lounge"!  However, I feel one aspect of the library should also improve...  The men's bathroom on the main entrance floor has gone "green", i.e. removal of the paper towels (the restroom near Java City still retains paper towels).  While this concept is a noteworthy one, I feel the hand dryers could be improved/updated to afford more efficient hand drying.  I have seen several models in a variety of restrooms which would enable restroom users significantly faster hand drying times.  This would 1) encourage people to wash their hands, as the slow drying process does inhibit some users, and 2) update the feel of the bathroom to match the newer changes to the library.  If you have questions please feel free to contact me.

Response:  Thanks for the suggestions.  I am aware of faster and better models for hand-drying but I don't think that the Facilities Department has the funding to upgrade at this point.  Perhaps in the future?  And I'll be glad to pass along your recommendation to them. Again, thanks.

Subject: Calendar

Suggestion: Is there going to be a July calendar of hours on the web page? Only June is available.

Response: Yes, it is up now. Our apologies! There was an error and it had to be corrected.

Subject: Public computers

Suggestion: Please give us more computers for the general public. I live in Clemson (and I'm a Clemson grad)and I'm appalled by how it seems you are squeezing out the general public from using the Clemson University library. First it was cutting back on parking slots near the library and now there are hardly any public computers for us. I realize you have your projects for the students but please be mindful of the needs of the public also. We pay taxes for your public institution.

Response: A major construction project is underway on the 4th floor affecting all of the space on the east side. The majority of public computers and furnishings were moved out for carpet replacement coming in mid- July. A portion of the machines will be returned in mid-August when the renovation is complete. Feel free to use the machines now available and also note that there are public computers on every floor (ask at the Reference or Circulation Desk for locations). For more information about the Library Workstation Use Policy please go here: http://www.clemson.edu/library/lib_overview/policies/workstationuse.html Parking decisions are made by the Parking Services Office and you may contact that office by calling (864)656-2270.

Subject: Public computers

Suggestion: We need more public computers back into the Cooper Library. Don't you realize that the taxpayers-the public- pay toward these public universities and we should have these computers available to us. It seems that you have decided that the public or the taxpayer does not matter in your library world. Please put more public computers in your library so we taxpayers can feel we are being considered, too. It is only fair. And please let us be able to sit down and use these public computers. Right now I am standing up. It seems you not only want to discourage us from using the computer too long but also limit the public computers to a very limited number available to us. Response: A major construction project is underway on the 4th floor affecting all of the space on the east side. The majority of public computers and furnishings were moved out for carpet replacement coming in mid-July. A portion of the machines will be returned in mid-August when the renovation is complete. Feel free to use the machines now available and also note that there are public computers on every floor (ask at the Reference or Circulation Desk for locations). Also, the tall stools are now available at the stations.

Subject: Book carts blocking aisle

Suggestion: Hey, so, up on the floor Java City is on, there's row in the back that's totally blocked by book carts full of books. It has been blocked for, like, at least a month. If i need something there, how do i get it? Response: Thanks so much for reminding us of this problem. A major shifting project is taking place on the 5th floor and has progressed much slower than we anticipated. Those book carts will be moved out of the way today (Friday, June 25, 2010). The project is slated to finish by mid-July. Our apologies and again thanks for bringing it to our attention!

Subject: First Floor

Suggestion: I came back to the library for the first time in probably about a year to get ready to continue my education as a post-graduate special student in fall. The first floor looks great. The new carpet and shelves make it look a lot better than it used to look. I haven't looked at the other floors so that's why I'm commenting only on the first floor. Response: Glad you like it. We too are pleased with the space but want to hear patron comments.

Subj:  Weekend Hours

Suggestion: I am sorry if this is a reoccurring question, but I am curious to why Cooper Library isn't open 24 hours on weekends. I am a new student here at Clemson, and I love the library, I think what y'all do is awesome! The tutoring services, the ASC, and even the Java Lounge, is pretty awesome to me, but taking on such a heavy load this semester, I am trying to find a quite place to study tonight.

Response:  Library hours are based on need and Friday/Saturday usage is so low that we can’t afford to shift staff from busier hours.  You may want to investigate the hours at Hendrix Center or the Union to see if there are alternatives.
