Youth County Day Camping
| Name | Sharon Grice | | Situation | There is a critical need in Marion County for youth activities, especially during the summer months. There are only a few structured affordable programs for youth in Marion County. | | Response | This is where the 4-H Program and day camps help by providing programs for youth in Marion County. The 4-H Program provides informal educational opportunities for youth and also introduces them to various
4-H project areas.
4-H offers day camps through the county Extension office, churches, daycares, recreation department and in school settings. Day camp activities include cooking, sewing, gardening, heritage arts, fishing, lamp building, rocketry, table etiquette and many more. We focus many of our programs on Life Skill activities such as citizenship, teamwork, decision-making and communication skills.
One purpose of our program is to make our youth aim for a goal and to show them what it feels like to succeed. A second goal is to encourage the youth to join 4-H, chose a project area and become prepared to compete on a county, state and eventually national level. Day camps are the first step in reaching the youth of this county. | | Impact | Many of our teens provide leadership for many of the day camps. The older 4-H'ers use the Knowledge they have learned to teach the younger children. This experience also helps them improve their leadership skills and give back to 4-H.
100% of the youth completed the 4-H summer program with 98% planning to adopt skills that they learned through the summer. 32% of the youth joined 4-H as a result of attending day camps.
